August 2024 Wrap-Up

I despise August.

It gets harder and harder every year to do basic living things during this month.

Reading, as a result of that, falls pretty low on the priority list. I don’t feel motivated to. When I force myself to read, the books don’t resonate with me. I am incapable of connecting with them.

I did my best.

Legendary by Stephanie Garber

Legendary is the sequel to Caraval. I gave both books three stars. The world of Caraval is its only redeeming quality: dark, glittering, and mysterious. The sisters are annoying and need psychiatric help. The men… The men are also dark and mysterious. I like them.

The plot of Legendary was more fun to me than the plot of Caraval. The stakes are higher, but it follows a similar blueprint to Caraval. I really hope the third book does something different, and that the sisters show some dynamic growth.

3/5.

Foxglove by Adalyn Grace

Foxglove is the sequel to Belladonna. Foxglove worked really well for me. It took the second-biggest issue I had with Belladonna (The characters are flat in that book.) and fixed it. Foxglove adds depth to the characters and raises the stakes with the introduction of Fate. The pacing of Foxglove is also a lot better. I actually had a hard time putting the book down.

The biggest problem, Death being creepy, is still there.

3/5.

The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren

This was my last summer read of the year. I was sick and tired of summer romances when I came back to this book to finish it, so I did my best to take that into consideration while deciding on a rating for this book.

Anna and Liam have to pretend to be in love and happily married while on a tropical island vacation with his family so he can inherit one-hundred million dollars.

I loved this book. Anna is a vivid, relatable character. The banter between her and Liam is witty and endearing. The setting is also incredibly vivid, I just got tired of the rich family drama.

4/5.

I was surprised when I checked Goodreads and saw that I had read three books this month. This month has felt long and arduous. Impossible. I can’t remember the last time I finished a book. I’ve started four different ones in the last week alone.

But I’m grateful that I was able to read these three and that they were good! I wasn’t blown away or amazed by any of them, but they were comforting to read.
